Journey Behind the Falls is one of the oldest attractions in Niagara Falls, and the only one that takes you behind the Horseshoe Falls. Visitors have been climbing down into the gorge here since 1832, when the first staircase was built for what was then called the “Sheet of Falling Water.”
Today an elevator takes you 125 feet down through the rock. From there, tunnels lead to two things you can’t get anywhere else. One is the cave-like portals that open right behind the curtain of water. The other is an observation deck at the foot of the 13-storey Horseshoe Falls. Niagara Parks describes the water crashing down in front of you as one-fifth of the world’s fresh water.
